After completing the postgraduation, many doctors in India aim to take the next step in their medical journey by pursuing a super-specialty degree here. They must need to clear one of the two entrance exams, namely INI SS or NEET SS, to get admission into various super-specialty programs in India. Both exams are highly competitive, and they serve different sets of institutions and follow different formats. So, having a clear understanding will help you make informed decisions. Here we will guide you through it.

What is INI SS?

The term INI SS stands for Institute of National Importance Super-Specialty. The exam is conducted by AIIMS New Delhi, and it provides admission into DM/M.Ch./MD hospital administration courses at top institutes in India like AIIMS-New Delhi, all new AIIMS, JIPMER-Puducherry, PGIMER-Chandigarh, NIMHANS-Bengaluru and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute in Trivandrum. The exam is conducted twice a year.

The INI SS exam includes two stages. Stage 1 is a written exam with 80 multiple-choice questions and is valid for all the Institutes of National Importance. The duration of the stage 1 part is 90 minutes. The stage 2, which is called departmental assessment, is applicable to all AIIMS and PGIMER Chandigarh only. It carries an additional 20 marks.

What is NEET SS?

NEET SS is the acronym of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Super Specialty, and it is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. The examination is conducted for admission to various DM/MCh and DNB courses. No other entrance exam is valid for admission to these courses as per the Indian Medical Council Act, 2016. The exam is conducted once a year.

Recently, the NBEMS has announced the introduction of time-bound sections in all MCQ-based examinations conducted by NBEMS. Accordingly, from NEET SS 2024 onwards, the question paper will have three sections, namely A, B, and C. Candidates can not proceed to the next section till the allotted time for the previous section is completed.

So, that’s all about INI SS and NEET SS. We hope this information was helpful for you. If your ambition is to join the elite institutions in India like AIIMS or PGIMER, INI SS is the right choice for you. If you are looking for a wide range of options across India, you can go for NEET SS. Whichever path you choose, it demands serious preparation and dedication, as the competition is very intense and the number of seats is limited.
